46. PLAYFULNESS

Our society is based on achievement. This is important for its prosperity. But there is a downside to this performance-oriented attitude. People define their value in terms of how much they have achieved and believe that they are what they have achieved. That’s why people continue and sell their real value for this idea.

We forget that the fact of mere existence or quality time spent with our loved ones is the real value. According to Dr. Gabor Maté and Dr. Stephen W. Porges, both experts in trauma therapy, the achievement-oriented attitude has its roots in trauma. We are driven by trauma to justify our existence by achieving more and more.

We sacrifice the most precious things, such as play or joy, for this drive. As a result, we have collectively forgotten how to play. The good news is that it’s never too late to start again. Even if you have forgotten how to play, you can recapture it in small steps. Play and joy are so important, so with that in mind, let’s play!
